Rachel Johnson is the author of four novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, which won the Whitbread Prize for Fiction in 1993. She also writes children's books. Born in London, she spent her childhood in East Africa, where she read voraciously, sat at the feet of scholars when she was young and visited schools in the slums of Nairobi. She was educated at Oxford University before joining the New Statesman magazine
Her first novel, The Family Album, was published in 1998; she followed it with When I'm Human (2003), which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize; and her most recent novel, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake (2007).
